THE EUROPEAN UNION

The European Union represents the most complex and the most successful political project of cooperation among European countries that after the Second World War provided a long-term integration and prosperity of its member states. The European Union has developed as an organization of sui generis character, the community of nations committed to democracy, peace and welfare of the citizens. The idea of the broad economic cooperation, opening of borders and the establishment of "four freedoms" (free movement of goods, services, capital and people) leads to the creation of a single market between the member states. The process of economic integration is not finished by the creation of the common market, but continued on, to the construction of economic and monetary union.

It was created primarily as a project of economic integration based on firm legal rules, the principles of equality and solidarity among the member states, the EU has evolved towards building a specific political and economic integration. Today, the EU has various strategic goals, the most important being the establishment of a peaceful Europe, rule of law and democracy and human rights. Passing through several rounds of enlargement, the EU today, instead of the initial six, has 28 member states, and the current structure of the EU is significantly different from what was originally the European Coal and Steel Community in the fifties and the European Economic Community represented in the eighties.

Union is a community based on common interests, institutions and laws of the Member States. Founding treaties and other legislation of the Union, are defined by the existence of the unique institutional structure, common market and currency, a common foreign and security policy, and cooperation in almost all fields of life.
